In-core temperature measurement is a critical issue for the safe operation of nuclear reactors. Classical thermocouples require shielded connections and are known to drift under high neutron fluence. As an alternative, we propose to take advantage of the multiplexing capabilities of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensors. Our experiments show that sensitivity to radiation depends on both the radiation field and the grating characteristics. For some FBGs installed in an aircooled graphite-moderated nuclear reactor the difference between the measurements and the readings of calibrated backup thermocouples was within the measurement uncertainty. In the worst case, the difference saturated after 30 h of reactor operation at about 5°C. To reach megagray per hour level gamma-dose rates and 1019 neutron/cm2 fluences, we irradiated multiplexed FBG sensors in a material testing nuclear reactor. At room temperature, FBG temperature sensors can survive in such radiation conditions, but at 90°C a severe degradation is observed. We evidence the possibility to use FBG sensing technology for in-core monitoring of nuclear reactors with specific care under wellspecified conditions. © 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Long-term temperature monitoring in a low flux nuclear reactor using fiber Bragg grating sensors

Multiplexed FBG temperature sensors are used to measure a temperature profile inside an irradiation channel of a low flux nuclear reactor. After 40 months, we show that the sensors still operate satisfactorily. The measured drift is lower than 3 ◦C.

Long-term radiation effects on fibre Bragg grating temperature sensors in a low flux nuclear reactor

Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensors have already shown short-term radiation tolerance in nuclear environments. However, the effect of long-term irradiation needed to be investigated. We therefore characterized multiplexed FBG temperature sensors inserted early 2000 in an irradiation channel of a low flux nuclear reactor. After 50 months, we show that the sensors still operate satisfac...

Radiation-resistant WDM Optical Link for Thermonuclear Fusion Reactor Instrumentation

The future International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a complex installation that will require permanent monitoring and frequent maintenance operations. The high-gamma dose rates, the high neutron fluence and other radiological hazards call for the use of remotehandled equipment. The management of heavy umbilicals connecting the control systems with the remote tools is therefore...

Fiber Optic Bragg-Grating Sensors

In-fibre Bragg gratings are sensor elements which are photo-written into optical fibre using intense ultra-violet laser beams and have the potential for the measurement of strain/deformation and temperature with applications reported including monitoring of highways, bridges, aerospace components and in chemical and biological sensors. The development of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) measuring sy...

Fiber Bragg Grating Temperature Sensors in a 6.5-MW Generator Exciter Bridge and the Development and Simulation of Its Thermal Model

This work reports the thermal modeling and characterization of a thyristor. The thyristor is used in a 6.5-MW generator excitation bridge. Temperature measurements are performed using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. These sensors have the benefits of being totally passive and immune to electromagnetic interference and also multiplexed in a single fiber. The thyristor thermal model consists o...
